leaky pocket
In the last few weeks of 2023 and the first weeks of 2024, I worked on ways to infuse and diffuse myself with the wild plants growing around the artificial river body, Teltowkanal, in Berlin. The leaky pocket consists of a simple set—a leaky pocket from which the vagrant partially drops the collected fruits—and a plant card for species identification. It is designed for foraging wild plants in winter, in the undefined terrain surrounding the man-made riverbed of the Berlin’s canal. The project engages with the ideas of feminist author Astrida Neimanis and her book Bodies of Water. According to Neimanis, none of us are truly individuals; rather, our bodies are transcorporeal—spongy, permeable, and interconnected. Leaky Pocket highlights the entanglement of our bodies with flowing fluids, distant places, and often unnoticed activities in society. It does so through the illustration of a specific public space—the banks of Berlin’s Teltowkanal—and the plants growing there, which are used to prepare the bevIerages we consume.
